Carpal tunnel syndrome; manual therapy versus surgery?

Working as a yoga teacher and massage therapist at a busy yoga centre for over 10 years, I regularly come across people with carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, numbness and weakness in the wrist and hand.  If you have an office based job and spend a lot of time on the computer you are likely to already be putting a lot of strain on your hands and wrists.

According to the the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy nearly 50% of all work-related injuries are linked to carpal tunnel syndrome, and people with this injury are more likely to miss work because of it.
Yoga can put a lot of extra pressure on the wrists (especially if you are a beginner) with downward dog, handstands, plank etc. Many yoga teachers recommend stretching techniques or the use of props to help relieve pain and although these can be useful, a good sports massage or myofascial release treatment can help reduce the symptoms very quickly and the effects can be longer lasting. If you don’t nip it in the bud quickly it will only get worse and then surgery is recommended for more severe carpal tunnel, although there’s absolutely no need to let it get that bad.

This research article recently published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy proves that massage therapy has a similar effectiveness for improving carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms as surgery. Given that knowledge why on earth would you want to go under the knife?

For pain free wrists and hands book a massage with me at triyoga Chelsea and Soho or Grace Medical Belgravia.

Yoga for stress workshop @triyoga Chelsea

I saw a yoga therapy client yesterday who wanted me to help with chronic headaches and back pain, she seemed doubtful as to whether yoga can help with her stress.
I told her that absolutely it could!
Yoga is a complete system for well-being which is unfortunately often reduced to and perceived as a workout or just physical exercise in the west.

The ultimate goal in yoga is to find our true self and to do this we need to change our identification with ourselves.
Yoga gives us the tools to change our relationship and attachment to our physical bodies, our thoughts and our emotions.
Not only does it give us a healthy body it allows use to choose how and whether we react to external factors, other people and our ourselves.
Yoga gives us the ability to distance or separate ourselves from what is undesirable and in doing so wholly connect to what is positive or desirable in our lives.

At my workshop we shall explore some of these tools and concepts and see how we can integrate them into our lives.

Happy National Vegetarian week!

People often ask me “aren’t yogis supposed to be vegetarian”?
The answer is yes, a Sattvic diet is a fundamental aspect of yoga. Sattva is the quality of purity and goodness and a sattivc diet is pure vegetarian (no eggs) and only very lightly spiced, abstinence from alcohol or other drugs is included in this diet.  As one progresses in their yoga practice the desire to continue to eat meat and take drugs is lost as the body becomes lighter and the mind brighter.  The heaviness that meat brings and the dullness that drugs especially alcohol brings can no longer be tolerated as the yogi progresses towards the quality of sattva.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t be a yoga practitioner or teacher and eat meat, we all start from different places and have different goals, some people start their yoga practice with a vegetarian diet, some with meditation, some with community work (selfless service) and some with the physical practice of asana.
